What kind of dog is a border collie


 Border collies are specialised animals. They are bred to work as sheepdogs.

Before taking on the responsibility of owning a border collie you must understand the breed well.
Border collies are alert and always ready to go. We cannot destroy the working instinct and so we must find new ways to channel it that is acceptable to both dogs and owners.

You can see border collies in agility, obedience, working trials and flyball. They are often favourite hobbies of these dogs. Of course border collies might work as drug-sniffer dogs etc. and they are known to have been used search and rescue dogs.

Please, remember, let your dog lie and be without doing anything. It doesn't need so many activities. Please, remember, border collies are living creatures, not machines.

But on "puppy-times" make sure that there is plenty of contact with children, adults, dogs and other animals. Let bordercollie get used to all kinds of noises.

Notice also, the owner ought to learn to recognise the body language of his dog. The dog gets to know his master better and he learns to spent time with other dogs. The goal is to have a friendly, obedient dog which can be taken to different places by its family because he is well behaved.

Of course it is also possible to leave the puppy/dog home alone, if necessary. A good education in the first year will guarantee you a great relationship with your dog for quite a lot of years.
